This hydraulic
clamshell grab is called a 'low-headroom' clamshell because
the hydraulic cylinders are mounted horizontally. In many
cases this type of clamshell is the only alternative in narrow
places like a ships' hold. The clamshell's low total height
dispenses with the need for additional headroom needed with
mechanical and other clamshells. Careful design with the use
of allosy steel gives minimum weight and maximum lifting capacity.
Good stability is achieved by a low center of gravity.
